In the entry “any other number of/any number of other” (p. 18) I use the example “There are any number of other colors I would have preferred to this sickening lime green.”
I had in mind an incident from the early fifties when our family doctor was summoned to our house to tend to some childhood ailment. Those were the days when house calls were still fairly routine. As he passed through the bathroom which my father had painted a rather garish shade of green, he commented, “Well, if somebody throws up in here it won’t show.”
